“The Power of Now” By Eckhart Tolle -Self Help

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, is proven to be a life line out of what can be the all consuming thoughts of our own mind.

Within human interactions we can be told that we are “spinning” or are “standing in our own way” as if these simple declarations will help us come out of the misery and lies we tell ourselves during times of struggle. They don’t.

What I found in Tolle’s writings was applications to assist in actually gaining control of the torment our own minds can put us through.

He teaches about the pain- body, surrendering, and shining light into the dark places that trigger pain. He also provides reassurance in the peace that the Now can bring, if we can get our mindset in the right place.

This book I would recommend a year after a person has been through some type of trauma. I don’t ever use the word trauma lightly, so when printed here I mean- trauma- of any sort.

The reason I recommend a year is because Tolle instructs that we need to have Being in the here and now. Focusing on the moments at present because the past, or what has happened to us that has caused turmoil, is in the past and we need to surrender and be fully engaged in what is happening in the Now.

This can be a very frustrating concept if the pain of our wounds are recent and new, or simply persist.

The loss of a loved one, whether physical or emotional, can be all consuming and devastating.

Or when trauma occurs because of being harmed by another person, perhaps justice needs to be served and there needs to be time in order to work through these feelings and events.

There needs to be space allowed for the realness of feeling.

I’m an advocate for feeling what we feel. Feelings are what remind us that we’re alive. Love and joy are the better of these feelings, but unfortunately pain also reminds us just how alive we are too. Tolle spends a little time assisting his readers in simply being in their pain (or feeling) but his work is more about us bringing our minds through it- which is why you will want to read this book!

Now that you have sat in your feelings and are so sick of the repeats that pain brings, Tolle can help you find your way out.

This book is for those that have been tortured by their pain, have survived it, and are choosing to keep living and have the desire to feel joy again. Tolle’s work helps readers to “accept things as they are.” Learn from the awful things that happen in this life. Move forward in enlightenment, because your experience has added depth to the person you’ve become, through additional understanding in various matters. Including greater compassion for others facing their own struggles.

“Since resistance is inseparable from the mind, relinquishment of resistance -surrender- is the end of the mind as your master, the impostor pretending to be “you,” the false god. All judgment and all negativity dissolve. The realm of Being, which had been obscured by the mind, then opens up. Suddenly, a great stillness arises within you, an unfathomable sense of peace. And within that peace, there is great joy. And within that joy, there is love. And at the innermost core, there is the sacred, the immeasurable, That which cannot be named.”

The Power of Now is a book readers need to read through the end because different questions are answered up until the final sentence on the last page. It was in the last few pages I had my own pounding questions answered, which might be the same as yours.

I wanted to heal through my own pain and I found answers to what felt like unanswerable questions through words like these…

“If you were conscious, that is to say totally present in the Now, all negativity would dissolve almost instantly. It could not survive in your presence. It can only survive in your absence. Even the pain-body cannot survive for long in your presence. You keep your unhappiness alive by giving it time. That is its lifeblood. Remove time through intense present-moment awareness and it dies.

But do you want it to die? Have you truly had enough? Who would you be without it?…

‘Take responsibility for your life. Do not pollute your beautiful, radiant inner Being nor the Earth with negativity. Do not give unhappiness in any form whatsoever a dwelling place inside you.”

This book was recommended to me by my special friend, who is also a member of the Literary Ladies group.
